Chew Valley School
1985
This was my first schools project, carried out in the spring of 1999 It is a memorial dedicated to Gavin Hawkins and Alex Lee sixth formers at the school who died in a car accident. Their friends at the school  collected the money and commissioned me to make it. After talking to the children, the  staff,  and to the families.  I designed a sculpture with the theme of rebirth.
I carved this in Indiana limestone on site so that everyone would see it evolving and the children and staff could talk to me.  I was also asked if I would teach some stone techniques to the art students taking their “A” levels.  Bankers were built and the students were invited to take part on a “drop in” basis. Below Ken Biggs head teacher , Hellen Lee and Brian and Jane Hawkins .
